Dear Tricolores, Steel Squad lovers!
Today, we revisit a chapter that transcends glory and solidifies itself as the cornerstone of Brazilian football. Long before any consolidated league or tournament, in 1959, Esporte Clube Bahia did not just win a championship; it inaugurated one, becoming the very first Brazilian Champion. An accomplishment that, at times, is overshadowed by other great moments, but which resides at the essence of our history, a true mark of pioneering.
In that year, the Brazilian Sports Confederation (CBD) created the Taça Brasil. The objective was simple yet ambitious: to crown a national champion who would represent the country in the newly formed Copa Libertadores da América. The challenge was Herculean. Bahia, the Bahian champion, would face the heavyweights from other states, in a knockout format that demanded nerves of steel and gala football. Our campaign was impeccable, overcoming formidable opponents like Ceará, Sport, and Vasco da Gama, showing that the Tricolor meant business and was ready for history.
But the true test of fire awaited in the grand final. On the other side of the pitch, the invincible Santos Futebol Clube, already beginning to display the brilliance of a certain Pelé, the 'King of Football,' accompanied by stars like Coutinho and Pepe. It was a Goliath against our David, a team that would come to dominate the world stage in the following years. Few would have given Bahia a chance, but the tricolor jersey carried the grit of Salvador and the audacity of those who fear no giants.
The first game, at Vila Belmiro, shocked Brazil. A surprising 3-2 victory for Bahia! Dalmar, Léo, and Alencar found the back of the Santos net, proving our attack was lethal. However, at Fonte Nova, Santos retaliated, scoring 2-0 and forcing the third and decisive clash. With the rules stipulating extra games in case of a draw in the number of victories, emotions were running high.
The final match was played at the Maracanã, a neutral venue, but one that seemed to vibrate with anticipation. And it was there that the Steel Squad made history. With goals from Vicente, Léo, and Alencar, Bahia won 3-1, silencing the stands and consecrating itself as the first Brazilian Champion of all time. The cries of "We are champions!" echoed, immortalizing a feat few could have imagined.
This achievement was not just a title; it was the founding act of what we know today as the Campeonato Brasileiro. Bahia did not just win a competition, it christened it with its sweat and its glory. This is the true tricolor soul: pioneering, resilient, and eternally victorious. May we never forget the magnitude of this moment, which paved the way for the rich history of national football and positioned our Esporte Clube Bahia in the pantheon of giants from day one. Pride that overflows the chest!
